Airline Crash Info is designed as a historical reference: a searchable way to explore commercial airline crash, accident, and incident records by airline, aircraft type, and year. This page explains what the data can help with, what it cannot prove, and how to read it responsibly.

Current dataset refresh

The local dataset metadata shows the records were last refreshed on May 30, 2026. The data-fetching script stores this timestamp whenever it writes an updated dataset.

Tracked source pages

The current dataset records 12 source page URLs. They are maintained in the project data pipeline rather than invented on this page.

What this dataset is for

The dataset is meant to help readers study aviation history, compare long-term patterns, and find concise summaries of reported commercial airline events. It is especially useful for questions such as which aircraft types appear in older records, how airline histories differ by decade, or what kinds of events shaped public safety discussions over time.

It is not a live operational risk tool. A historical entry describes an event that was reported and summarized; it does not say whether a specific flight today is safe, whether a current crew is prepared, or whether a modern aircraft is maintained well.

Where the records come from

Records are imported from public Wikipedia pages already used by the project, then normalized into a simpler structure for browsing. The source categories currently include:

  • Wikipedia airline accident and incident lists grouped alphabetically
  • dedicated airline accident and incident pages, including carrier-specific histories
  • structured table and list entries that identify dates, aircraft, locations, flight numbers, and summaries when available

Because the source material is public and community-edited, the site treats it as a starting point for research rather than a final investigative record. When source pages disagree, omit details, or use broad wording, the local record may reflect those limits.

How terms are used here

Crash is used in the broad, everyday sense for events involving substantial aircraft damage, loss of control, collision, impact, or destruction. It does not imply a particular legal finding.

Accident generally refers to a serious aviation occurrence that caused major damage, injury, fatalities, or a comparable safety outcome. Official definitions vary by jurisdiction and period.

Incident is broader. It may include runway excursions, hijackings, hard landings, non-fatal damage, emergency landings, or other reported events that affected safety but were not always classified as accidents by an authority.

Why raw counts are not safety rankings

A high historical count can simply mean an airline is old, large, well-documented, or operated during eras when aviation technology and regulation were very different. A low count can mean a carrier is newer, smaller, less documented in English-language sources, or has fewer historical records available.

Current airline safety is better judged with recent exposure-adjusted measures: flights operated, passenger miles, fleet age, audit results, serious incident rates, maintenance oversight, training, and regulatory context. This site does not currently calculate those exposure-adjusted rankings.

Context that changes interpretation

  • Historical era: early jet-age and propeller-era operations had different navigation, weather, airport, and regulatory environments than modern airline operations.
  • Aircraft generation: comparing an older variant with a modern aircraft family can hide decades of changes in avionics, engines, warning systems, and crew procedures.
  • Airline age and scale: long-running global airlines have had far more years and flights in which events could be recorded than smaller or newer carriers.
  • Route network: mountainous terrain, remote airports, conflict zones, weather exposure, and short-field operations can affect what kinds of events appear in a carrier history.
  • Reporting quality: older events and events from less-covered regions may be summarized unevenly, while recent events may receive more detailed public documentation.

Refresh schedule and corrections

The dataset is refreshed through the project’s data-fetching script when updates are run. The latest stored refresh date is shown above and on the crash dataset page. There is no claim that every source page is checked in real time or that breaking aviation news appears immediately.

If you find an error, duplicate, missing context, or wording that could be clearer, please send the airline name, event date, and a short explanation through the contact page. Helpful corrections are specific and point to verifiable public information where possible.
